The Worst Band Names Of '07

Posted on by Flickr Music

We'd like to extend our gratitude to the A.V. Club, who provided the ultimate in laugh-out-loud study breaks this week, with their list of the worst band names of 2007.

Compiled from stacks of press materials and promo CDs, the Club offers a look at band names gone wrong. The collection is broken up into several categories because, let's face it, there are the disastrously bad ones (see "Sex Rat" at left), and then there are the clever, maybe ironic, but still-making-this-list names like Dance Me Pregnant, Harmonica Lewinsky and Chevy Metal. But our favorite had to have been Butt Stomach, which fell into the "Anatomy" category.

You have to see this list for yourself. So do it. Then check out our list of the most cringe-inducing photos of bands on MySpace. You'll thank us later.

IFLTS: 'Rise Up With Fists,' Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins

Rise Up With Fists,' Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins
From 2006's 'Rabbit Fur Coat'

Sure, Jenny Lewis swapped her usual indie rock partners from Rilo Kiley for a pair of soulful and tuneful identical twins. Sure, she blended rock, folk, country and gospel -- and managed to make it all work. Sure, she references God half a dozen times throughout the track and yet, this song still can't get out of my head.

Prima J - Nadie [Music Video!]

Posted on by Flickr Music

Pop duo Prima J, made up by American/Mexican cousins Janelle Martinez and Jessica Martinez, has recorded a spanish cover of the recent Alicia Keys single "No One", the cover's titled "Nadie". This is the first time i hear about these girls but doing some research on the internet i found that they recorded a song titled "Rock Star" for the soundtrack of a teen comedy movie called "Bratz" released earlier this year, so they're not new in the music business. Prima J is currently working on their official debut album which is expected to be released in 2008 via Geffen Records. About this "No One" cover, well it sounds a bit weird for me hearing it in spanish but i mean it's def a cool twist. Check it out

Stephen Stills Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer

Posted on by Flickr Music

Stephen Stills has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, according to Crosby, Stills and Nash bandmate Graham Nash. In a telephone interview with the 'Larry King Live' show on Monday, Nash said Stills is scheduled to undergo an operation on January 3, which is also his 63rd birthday.

The announcement was made just one day after Dan Fogelberg passed away from the disease. "Unlike Danny (Fogelberg), who left it too long to be seriously checked, Stephen found his at an early stage," Nash told King.

There has been no formal comment

Kate Nash Picks Up the Pace

Posted on by Flickr Music

Anglophiles are certainly familiar with Kate Nash, the young singer-songwriter who went from Internet sensation to scoring a No. 1 album in the U.K. with her effort, 'Made of Bricks.' It also didn't hurt that admirer Lily Allen moved Nash into her top eight friends on MySpace. When Nash made her American debut playing a string of NYC shows a couple of months back, she got to see first hand the results of cyber stardom.

"I've never played music and done press here [yet] people know who I am and there's awareness. It's really incredible," Nash tells Spinner. "It just speeds things up and you have to be up for the pace of it."

While Nash is more than up for the pace, she admits that there were some nerves coming Stateside, something she'll be doing much more of in the new year when she kicks off a U.S. tour in January. "I was nervous doing my shows 'cause I was like, 'God, are they just looking at me going, "What the hell is this weird English girl going on about?"' she says. "In my head, they can't really know who I am. I do gigs in London now and I'm very comfortable. It's like I'm being taken out of the bath and thrown in a cold shower. I've got to keep up and start again."

Eastern Conference Champions, 'The Box' - Video Premiere

Posted on by Flickr Music

Philadelphia's D.I.Y. trio Eastern Conference Champions get animated in their new 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'-influenced video for 'The Box.' The clip features a lighter take on the film, with patients dancing to the feel-good sounds of ECC. "'The Box' was a little scary for ECC," founder Greg Lyons told Spinner. "Up until then, we were used to making our own videos on iMovie, having complete control and being the only ones to blame if it wasn't good enough." The trio wound up putting their faith in director Elliot Jokels, though. "When he submitted a treatment, it immediately appealed to us, kind of a 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' meets A-ha, we knew this was the move," Lyons said. Have an exclusive look at 'The Box' in its animated glory.

Lily Allen Is Pregnant

Posted on by Flickr Music

OK, so like, babies are totally the new handbag. Seriously though. Look at Nicole Richie. Christina Aguilera. J.Lo. Sheryl Crow. Amy Winehouse admits to wanting one. Britney Spears has two under her belt while it was announced on Tuesday that her sister, Jamie Lynn, is now pregnant. See what you started, Angelina? Nevertheless, it's with open arms that Club Knocked Up welcomes Lily Allen, who is pregnant with her first child with boyfriend Ed Simmons, 37, of the Chemical Brothers.

"As the pregnancy is at a very, very early stage, the couple ask that you respect their privacy," the 22-year-old singer's rep said in a statement. "The couple will be making no further comment but they are obviously both thrilled by the news."

Meanwhile, Allen is currently working on the follow-up to her 2006 Grammy-nominated debut, 'Alright, Still,' which was previously scheduled for release in 2008. Despite rumors to the contrary, the album will hit shelves on time. "Lily's new album will be released as planned next year," her rep confirmed.

Shannyn Sossamon Works With Waits, Imagines Blonde Redhead

Posted on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 by Flickr Music

For the many who can never get enough Tom Waits, the bard of counter-culture turns up in the witty indie film, 'Wristcutters: A Love Story,' a dark romance that centers on the post-suicide journey of a trio of friends. One of the leads, actress Shannyn Sossamon, confesses she didn't realize until after she began promoting the film just how devoted Waits' fans can be.

"I get asked about it so much," Sossaman tells Spinner of working with the singer-songwriter. "Four out of every five people that talk to me about this movie get in my face, 'What was it like?' And all of a sudden, I started feeling, 'This is a really big [deal].'"

Sossamon believes her experience was unique because she didn't come into the project as a big fan. Still, she has nothing but praise for Waits and his performance. "He was just this wonderful man with a great presence," she says. "[He's] hard worker, great actor, quiet, wonderful."

R.E.M. Releasing New Album in April

Posted on by Flickr Music

Recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees R.E.M. have slowly unveiled details surrounding their forthcoming album, including live debuts of the new tunes. Now, frontman Michael Stipe has set a release date for the follow-up to 2004's 'Around the Sun.'

"Let me tell you a secret," he said at a December 6 charity auction in New York. "We have a great f---ing record in the bag. It's a big change. It's coming out on April Fool's Day."

One of the new songs, 'Until the Day Is Done,' debuted on 'Anderson Cooper 360' in October. That tune served soundtrack to the network's 'Planet in Peril' series.

Hip-Hop Poet Saul Williams Covers U2 Anthem

Posted on by Flickr Music

Spoken-word musician/poet Saul Williams recently took on U2's 1983 epic 'Sunday Bloody Sunday.' Williams paid tribute to the veteran group with his own earthy rendition of the noble arena anthem, with the production help of Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor.

Being a longtime fan of the Irish quartet, Williams tells Spinner, "This is my favorite U2 song of all time. I first heard it while I was an exchange student to Brazil in my junior year of high school. I wasn't familiar with the massacre in Ireland that the song refers to, but I easily aligned it with my experience as an African-American and recognized it as a revolutionary song."

Amy Winehouse Questioned for Evidence Tampering

Posted on by Flickr Music

Fresh off her (slightly disturbing, somewhat promising) resolution to get clean in the new year, Amy Winehouse is facing trouble with the law ... again.

It appears that the embattled singer is wanted for questioning in an alleged evidence-tampering scam associated with husband Blake Fielder-Civil's assault case. After raiding her home in November, officials believe that James King, the victim, was offered bribes to change his story and leave the country.

According to Britain's News of the World, the singer and her equally troubled husband (it's not a contest, kids) have made a suicide pact in the event that they are handed long jail sentences. "She's determined they'll end it together," a friend of the Grammy-nominated singer told Britain's News. "She's really terrified this time. She's teetering on the brink."

Travel Without Arriving: Tinariwen's Journey to Global Consciousness

Posted on by Flickr Music

"You never get the impression that you've arrived."
That's Eyadou Ag Leche, bass player for the band Tinariwen, translated by the Saharan group's manager, Andy Morgan. He could very well be glibly summing up the life of the Touareg, the nomadic culture to which the band and its bracing music belong.

But what he's referring to is the Tinariwen mission, an intertwined course to raise global awareness of the Touareg (or Tuareg, as it is sometimes spelled). Before Tinariwen came along a few years ago, even many passionate international music fans had never even heard the word "Touareg" outside of it being used for the name of a Volkswagen model. Today, at least in some circles, Touareg is known as a vital, oft-oppressed "people without a country," right alongside the Roma and the Kurds. And inarguably,Tinariwen have had a lot to do with that. With its third album, 'Aman Iman: Water is Life,' released in 2007, the group solidified its status as one of the global-music sensations of recent years, the most prominent ambassador of Touareg culture to the world, and a force of pride and political progress for its people at home.

Throwback of the Day: Jade - “Don’t Walk Away”

Posted on by Flickr Music

Alright, I had to do it. And someone mentioned this on a recent throwback, so I had to go and find Jade’s “Don’t Walk Away.” I still own all of their albums, because Jade could sang! Man…I MISS girl groups like this.

Though, I’m going to give it up to Cherish, because while they aren’t a Jade, Brownstone or SWV, those sisters be straight singing too. They have great harmonies and sound really good together. They have a great blend.

I yearn HARDCORE for R&B like this man. Like, for real.

And this video? LOL she made ME want to go to USC. LOL @ them walking around the cat in the very beginning. That cat was like, “bch plz I’m not moving!” This song sounds kinda dirty during the breakdown — “this is what it sounds like…” Oh, and don’t forget the dookie braids ROFL.

The beginning of this song is still classic though. “We’ll get back to youuuuuuuuuuuu.” I used to sing that in choir in h.s. with the homies. LOL. Ahh memories!

FYI: Will Smith Got The Juice!

Posted on by Flickr Music

Will Smith’s latest “I Am Legend” debuted at the box office with $76.5 million dollars! WHAT!? Will has officially become like, THE A-list, black power actor/producer in Hollywood. He should have no problem getting $20-30 million a picture now. Sam Jackson, eat your heart out.

For the last man on Earth, Will Smith sure has a lot of friends. The Warner Bros. tale “I Am Legend,” starring Smith as a plague survivor who may be the last living human, debuted with $76.5 million, the biggest December opening ever and a personal best for one of Hollywood’s top box-office champs, according to studio estimates Sunday.

“It’s no wonder Will Smith feels so lonely. Everyone else on Earth is in the movie theater,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers.

“I Am Legend” smashed Smith’s personal debut record, easily exceeding the $52.1 million opening weekends of “I, Robot” and “Men in Black II,” his previous bests. “I Am Legend” outdid the $72.6 million premiere of 2003’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” the previous best December opening.

“It’s nice to be in the Will Smith business,” said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros. “He is just the No. 1 box-office star in the world today.” (source)

Me thinks he should never even bother rapping anymore LOL.

And on the other side of the checkbook, “The Perfect Holiday,” featuring Gabrielle Union and Morris Chestnutt, opened up at #6 with $2.97 million dollars. Ouch.

I guess one black Christmas movie was enough for the year LOL. I personally am not enamored with Morris’ acting enough or Gabby’s for that matter to drag myself out for that one.

Did anyone see “I Am Legend” or “The Perfect Holiday”? What are your reviews?

Did Remy Ma Just Get Kicked Out The Closet? (NSFW?)

Posted on by Flickr Music

Some chick (LOL, I use that term loosely) is on Youtube claiming that she’s had relations with Remy Ma. Dude even has her call up Remy on the phone on speaker, and she answers, too. However, this seems like it may be a little bit of a farce. She all “yeah, Remy ate the box!”

*expires and turns to dust*

I wouldn’t turn it up too loud if you are at work, but there isn’t any nudity or anything like that. Just a man spouting off at the mouth.

If it’s true, I mean….hello Captain Obvious ROFL. But w/e. I could care less.

The Dark Knight Returns

Posted on by Flickr Music

Guess who’s back? Back again? The Joker’s back. Tell a friend. Or something. In the new trailer for 2008’s The Dark Knight, we’re treated to a visual smorgasbord of a bleakly apocalyptic Gotham City (which, for those of us who live in New York City, is pretty much every day). Following the events of the last film, the Batman and Lieutenant Gordon decide to rid the city of the remaining vestiges of its criminal underworld. Unfortunately, they’re blocked in that attempt by the Joker, who looks twice as scary as Jack Nicholson ever did. We’re counting the days until July 18.

Yesterday night i attended to the 50 cent concert here in Madrid, Spain, that's why there weren't more post after the Lil' Mama's one, just so you know. And damn there were lots of BIG 50 or rap music fans cause they were feeling every song like it was the last one xD, and some times it kinda annoyed me cause i couldn't see properly if everybody was with the arms up and jumping, but then i realize i couldn't complain cause i was the same when Beyonce gave a concert here hehe. The Barbados star Rihanna won on Friday night the award for "Best Song" in the "International Category of Non-Spanish Language" at the Awards Gala of "Los Premios Principales" hosted by Los40 radio held at Palacio De los Deportes here in Madrid, Spain. Rihanna was competing in this category with Nelly Furtado, The Fray, Mika and Snow Patrol. I was really rooting for Rihanna since "Umbrella" is still a hit here but i was like: If she wins there will be no one to accept the award for her nor she's made a video thanking for the award. But my surprise was that in fact she had recorded a video from the UK, where she's on tour, for accepting the award! Thank god i had my camera to record the moment. Riri even said a few words in spanish for her spanish fans. "Espero verós pronto en España!" ("I hope to see you soon in Spain"). Hopefully she adds a new date on her european tour and comes to Spain or maybe for the next one xD. Would be the 1at time and would be really cool.

Female Rapper

Posted on by Flickr Music

Well, there's at least one female rapper who's in a studio these days, not a courtroom or jail cell. Former inmate Lil' Kim is coming out with her first-ever mixtape in advance of an '08 release, reports MTV.com. The pint-size rapstress, who has reteamed with her original business crew, calls her mixtape Ms. G.O.A.T. Kim is again working with Lance "Un" Rivera, who was her original manager, as well as Trackmasters. Old friend Mr. Cee of New York's Hot 97, is putting out the mixtape. "Chillin' Tonight" one of the mixtape's hotter joints has already surfaced on radio around the country. "I never did a mixtape before, so this is like ... a new album," Kim said. "I got my boy Mister Cee. He's been holding it down since the B.I.G. days. He's part of the family.

Kim's last CD, The Naked Truth on Atlantic, suffered when it was released just as she started her one-year federal sentance for perjury in an infamous Hot 97 shooting case. Despite singles like "Lighters Up" and "Dirty," the CD under-performed and Kim no longer has a deal with Atlantic. However, her BET show "Countdown to Lockdown" did so well that it appeared that folks were still interested in the rap star, but no CD was announced after Kim's release in July 2006.

However, it appears the diminutive diva has regrouped and will put out a CD next year on Queen Bee Records in conjunction with Flavor Unit. Despite calling herself the greatest of all time, Kim pays homage to some of the MC's that inspired her career including Mc Lyte, Lady of Rage and Lauryn Hill, by rhyming over some of the tracks that made them famous. She also introduces her own artist, Shamel, who Kim calles a mix between Mase and Fabolous.

"It's a collaboration of freestyles, brand-new songs," Cee told MTV.com. "Shout out to the Trackmasters — they helped put it together. Whoo Kid is ... helping me put the tape together. It's incredible. I don't even think it deserves to be a mixtape. It's like an album."

The biggest revelation on Wu-Tang's first record

Posted on by Flickr Music

The biggest revelation on Wu-Tang's first record in six years isn't the Beatles "reinterpolation" "The Heart Gently Weeps" or even that the album actually came out. It's that the project is as strong as it is—for all the years of obligatory infighting there's a cohesion and strength to these "8 Diagrams." RZA keeps his foot in the sludgy gutter beats and extended chopsocky decoration of Wu-Tang past, but he's also expanding his reach. George Clinton cameos on the nodding "Wolves," and "Rushing Elephants" rolls on a shimmering string section from hell. Ghostface Killah is as wickedly esoteric as ever, Method Man sounds reinvigorated and snapped out of his recent slump, and Raekwon, who's been on record decrying "8 Diagrams," is ice-pick sharp. The absence of ODB is felt more than you'd expect, although the obituary "Life Changes" provides a sense of closure in an album that feels more like a next step. —Jeff Vrabel

Janet Jackson - Feedback [New Single!]

Posted on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 by Flickr Music

Nobody's waiting 'til Saturday! The brand new Janet Jackson single has just leaked. It's titled "Feedback" and apparently it was produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins. I'm soooo loving it! Uptempo, fresh and catchy. Janet's new studio album will be hitting stores in February 2008 via Island Records.

Sexed Up Singer Asked to Play Virgin Mary

Posted on by Flickr Music

Admittedly, a lot of people tend to exclaim "Mother of God!" when getting wind of Britney Spears' increasingly disturbing escapades -- a chorus that French movie producer Phillippe Rebboah apparently misunderstood in a mighty big way. Rebboah, who obviously believes that 'tis the season to be blasphemous, has approached the singer -- who's in the running for Worst Mother of 2007 -- to return to the big screen as a modern-day version of the Best Mother of Year One.

Yes, the producer thinks that Britney would be the ideal actress to play a reimagined Virgin Mary in a satirical film titled 'Sweet Baby Jesus.' This version of the tale takes place in Bethlehem, Maryland -- presumably to avoid the wrath of the good people of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania -- and features a virgin birth that takes place on Christmas Eve. While we'll grant that we don't always tend to our immortal soul as well as we could, we'd probably trade our usual Diet Pepsi for an extra-large holy water should we get invited to a screening of such a flick -- since Rebboah is probably twisted enough to try to cast Verne Troyer in the title role.

Radiohead Gets Reworked for (More)

Posted on by Flickr Music

Radiohead's previous albums have incited bootlegs and remixes far and wide. In the spirit of the band's recent pay-what-you-want formula for their latest album, 'In Rainbows,' the band will be unofficially sanctioning eight select remixes free of charge, called 'Rainydayz Remixes.'

The collection features tweaked-out trip-hop mixes by Oakland producer Amplive, including guest appearances from the likes of Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Too Short and Zion. The full tracklist and roster for 'Rainydayz Remixes' will be announced on January 4, with the downloading mayhem to commence the following week.

Natalie Gauci - The Winner's Journey

Posted on by Flickr Music

Here she is Natalie Gauci, the winner of Idol 2007. I don't know whether this happens in Idol everywhere else but in Australia instead of releasing an album of original tracks straightaway, the artist is given time to work and produce a decent debut and so instead a Winner's Journey album is released. The album features most of the songs or the best ones that the Winner in this case Natalie sung during her time on the show. Natalie this year had the opportunity to re-record those song in the studio unlike previous winner Damien Leith, who's Winner's Journey album was just filled with the actual Live songs he sung (So you would here clapping and screaming and the songs were shorten). Although I don't like Natalie as much as I like Matt, but this album is pretty good. Her rendition of Rihanna's Umbrella, her version of Gnarls Barkley's Crazy and her take on OneRepublic's huge hit Apologize (Which ironically according to some say, that her performance of their song increased their sales and eventually prevented her Winner's Single to get the number 1 spot). Although I hate to admit it, this album is a definite listen to and worth the money. Other songs include Michael Jackson's Man In The Mirror, Ella Fitzgerald How High The Moon, Pink's Nobody Knows and of course the winner's single Here I Am.
